About the project
"La batalla contra la obesidad" Series of editorial illustrations based on the newspaper article "The Battle Against Obesity", published in the newspaper El País Semanal, by Pablo Linde. (you can read the article here)
The briefing I outlined for this personal project was to create the cover, 3 full-page illustrations, one 1/4-page illustration, and one 1/2-page illustration.
Article Synopsis: Obesity, recognized by the WHO as a complex chronic disease, constitutes a growing public health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. This phenomenon develops within a context marked by social inequality and obesogenic environments, where ultra-processed, calorie-dense food options are predominant, easily accessible, and low-cost, combined with limited opportunities for active lifestyles.
The article addresses the causes of this condition, its medical implications, and the emotional impact associated with social stigma. It also examines the limitations of current treatments, such as innovative medications (Ozempic, Wegovy) and generic diets, which lack personalized approaches and fail to address the structural roots of the problem.
Description of the communicative intention
In my project, I aimed to explore the various themes related to the article. The cover reflects how a person confronts their problems, highlighting the constant burden and pressure that come with it.
The initial illustration of the article introduces the viewer to a world dominated by ultra-processed foods and junk food. In the background, the figure of a child appears, symbolizing how this issue impacts individuals from an early age.
Throughout the article, my illustrations address topics such as stigma, social pressure, and the weight of external judgment, as well as the discrimination faced by people with obesity. I also include a critique of generic and impersonal diets imposed on individuals, which overlook their specific needs and unique contexts.
